The Messerschmitt Bf 109E on the Western Front
By Peter Scott Series Editor Neil Robinson

The objective of this book is to document the colour schemes carried by the Luftwaffe's Messerschmitt Bf 109E fleet on the 'Western Front' throughout 1940. This period encompassed the 'Phoney War' ('Sitzkrieg'); the assaults on Denmark and Norway; the offensive on France and the Low Countries; and the Battle of Britain.
Many other works have covered Luftwaffe colour schemes in detail, so by way of an introduction, I would like to explain how the colour schemes of the following profiles were established. This preamble therefore takes a slightly different perspective from previous works.

The Hawker Hurricane 1939 -1945 in RAF. Commonwealth and FAA service
By H C Bridgewater Series Editor Neil Robinson

The Hawker Hurricane entered service with the Royal Air Force some eighteen months before the start of the Second World War and was still on 'active service' at the end of the conflict. It can be said that the Hurricane fought in more campaigns, on more fronts, and in more countries and Theatres than any other British fighter during that war. This particular volume covers the camouflage schemes and markings carried by Hurricanes, in a variety of different Marks and sub-types, which served with the RAF, Commonwealth and Fleet Air Arm squadrons between September 1939 and August 1945. Because of the scope of the subject, the coverage given here is of
necessity relatively brief. Much research is still going on into the finer details of the aircraft camouflage and
markings used by the RAF and FAA during the Second World War period, so it is perhaps inevitable that some
of the information given here may subsequently need revision. That said, the contents of this book reflect
the extent of our collective knowledge of this subject at the present time of writing. I am indebted to Paul Lucas for
sharing some of his research with me; to Peter Scott for his excellent artwork; Andrew Thomas, Dick Ward
and Ian Carter for the photographs, and to the series editor, Neil Robinson who exercised great
patience and tact whilst convincing me that I could indeed write something of this nature.

Combat Colours no 5 The de Havilland Mosquito in RAF Photographic Reconnaissance and Bomber service 1941to 1945
By Paul Lucas Series Editor Neil Robinson

The de Havilland Mosquito was one of the world's first true multi-role combat aircraft, which could undertake a number of different roles with a high degree of success. During the Second World War, it was used by the RAF as a Photographic Reconnaissance aircraft, Bomber, Night Fighter, Interdictor, Fighter- Bomber, High Altitude Fighter and Anti-Shipping Strike aircraft - and this only covers the broad role classifications, let alone the more specialised sub-divisions of these roles. This book examines the camouflage, and to a lesser degree the markings, of RAF Mosquitoes operating in just two of these roles - Photo Reconnaissance and Day andNight Bomber.
It draws on primary sources held by such institutions as the as the Public Record Office and the RAF Museum amongst others, which take the form of Air Publications, Air Diagrams, Air Ministry Orders; DTD Specifications; files once held by the Air Ministry, Ministry of Aircraft Production, Ministry of Supply, Royal Aircraft Establishment, Operational RAF Commands and Works Drawings, as well as a number of private individuals. The result is not intended to be the final word on the subject, but aims instead to provide the aircraft enthusiast and modeller with a basic guide to what camouflage schemes and markings were carried by the Mosquito and why; and to provide a
basis from which further research may be carried out. The nomenclature used in this book is that of the documents
consulted. Thus types of roundel are referred to by the correct terms used in Air Publication 2656A and other
documents, and not the Bruce Robertson notation familiar to most modellers. Proper colour names as
given in various documents are begun with capital letters eg 'Ocean Grey', whilst colloquial names and references to a non-specific colour, eg 'orange', are in small type throughout.

During the Second World War it was used by the RAF as a Photographic Reconnaissance aircraft, Bomber, High Altitude Fighter, Night Fighter, Interdictor, Fighter Bomber and Anti Shipping Strike aircraft - and this only covers the broad role classifications, let alone the more specialised sub divisions of these roles. This particular volume, Part Two of a two-part series, examines the camouflage and to a lesser degree the markings of Mosquitoes operating in the Fighter, Fighter Bomber and Maritime Strike roles. Mosquitoes operating in the Photographic Reconnaissance and Bomber roles were previously covered in Part One, Combat Colours No 5 'The de Havilland Mosquito in RAF Photographic Reconnaissance and Bomber service
1941 to 1945'. Like the previous Mosquito volume, this volume draws on primary sources held by such institutions as the as the Public Record Office and RAF Museum amongst others, as well as a number of private individuals. RAF Fighters 1945 - 1950 UK based
Written by Paul Lucas

Formed out of an amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service on 1 April 1918, the Royal Air Force is the world's oldest independent Air Arm, and the camouflage and markings carried by its aircraft have proved to be amongst the most fascinating aspects of its subsequent history.
It is therefore surprising that so comparatively little has been written on the subject over the last few years. That so little has been written, suggested to Guideline Publications, that the first of this new series of camouflage and markings monographs should deal with the RAF.

Once studied in detail however, it became apparent that there was no comprehensive and sufficiently reliable body of material readily available on the RAF to base such a publication on.
The solution to this was to start entirely from scratch, using the primary sources held by institutions such as The Public Record Office, RAF Museum, and Fleet Air Arm Museum amongst others, and a number of private individuals. These take the form of Air Publications, Air Diagrams, Air Ministry Orders, DTD Specifications, files once held by the Air Ministry, Ministry of Aircraft Production, Ministry of Supply, Royal Aircraft Establishment, Operational RAF Commands, Works Drawings, and contemporary publications such as 'Flight'.

The result is not intended to be the final word on the subject, but aims instead to provide the aircraft enthusiast and modeller with a basic guide to what camouflage schemes and markings were carried and why; and to provide a basis from which further research can be carried out.
The nomenclature used in this book is that of the original contemporary documents consulted. Thus, it was decided to refer to the Types of roundel for instance, by their correct terms used in Air Publication 2656A, and not the familiar notation system developed by Bruce Robertson in his 1956 Harleyford Publication book 'Aircraft Camouflage and Markings 1907 to 1954'.

Proper colour names as given in AP 2656A are headed with capital letters, eg 'Dark Green', whilst colloquial names and references to a none specific colour, eg. 'orange', are headed in lower case throughout. Aircraft Mark numbers and other numerical designations changed from roman to arabic numerals in 1947 and this change is also reflected in the text.
