On Saturday, 4 December 2022 Guideline Publications held its annual London Plastic Modellers Show at its established venue, the Haverstock School in Chalk Farm, London. This year's show was bigger and better than ever, with more clubs, traders and a steady stream of visitors attending the event which was untroubled by train strikes or pandemic-related restrictions for the first time since 2019. We were delighted to welcome several new clubs, including IPMS Central Lancashire and the Gunpla and Mecha Special Interest Group (who took away the Regis Auckland Trophy for the Best Club Display).

Traders present covered all aspects of the plastic modelling hobby, including kits, tools and reference materials. The competition was very well supported, especially in the fantasy and sci-fi figures and diorama categories. They were some great pieces on display, and it was good to see some new faces entering the competition.

The stand-out models included Tim Forster's 'Road to Singapore', an impressive diorama showing a Commonwealth 2-pdr crew engaging a Japanese Ha-Go tank during the Battle for Singapore, while Joey F, Martin Collir and Fet Milner entered some beautifully painted fantasy and historical figures. The Best of Show, however, was won by the very talented modeller and LPMS stalwart, Raf Sikorski, for his wonderful scratch-built 1/48 'Tsar Tank.' Our thanks to everyone who turned out to support the show on a chilly December day and we look forward to welcoming everyone back to our Spring Show on Sunday, 25 March.

On 25 March 2023, Guideline Publications will introduce the first of a series of seasonal shows that bring together traders from all the modelling and collecting genres covered by its magazine titles. This will include toy soldiers, miniature railways, military and aircraft modelling, fantasy figures and farm models, to name a few. The Spring Show on 25 March will take place at the Havistock School.

In the face of a changing marketplace SAM has proved once again that it is the first, the best, and the most obvious choice for aircraft modellers. With over four decades of publication behind it, and an editorial team committed to providing the broadest possible coverage of the hobby no other magazine has provided such stability and continuity through these challenging times, and we continue to build on this reputation month on month with a balanced content of news, reference material, and modelling to offer the reader not only choice but the inspiration on which to base it.

Our historical and reference pieces are widely respected for the coverage they offer, and collected by readers for their ground-breaking research. Our monthly centre-section offers a one-stop precis of aircraft types based on the old 'Profile' series, but updated with colour artwork and scale drawings, while Colour Conundrum draws on original Air Ministry documentation to offer new ideas for well-covered subjects, often with unique insights into camouflage and markings.

From first-time builders to competition winners, SAM has something for everyone, showcasing techniques and products, and demonstrating skills and ideas that can turn an everyday model into a show-stopper. Always inclusive, our core modelling content is aimed at all skill levels and disciplines. There is no 'right' way to build a model. We each assimilate skills and ideas to suit our own tastes, and no publication is better attuned to what its readers want and need from a magazine. Make SAM your choice!

Colour Conundrum by Paul Lucas

What to build next? Inspirational and original reference material has been a cornerstone of SAM since its inception, and 'Colour Conundrum' is designed specifically to offer the modeller something different. With original research based on surviving records in the National Archive at Kew the aim of these articles is to throw fresh light upon some old questions, to challenge some long held views on aircraft camouflage and markings, and to pose new questions that had arisen as a result of the research to which the answers were not yet known.

Quoting extensively from primary sources, the articles also provide valuable insight into the organisation and administration of the air force, and the many thousands of documents and memos that passed from office to office behind the scenes, providing background and understanding that add depth and focus to a model, as well as an opportunity to understand why a specific colour scheme may have been either selected or rejected.

Author Paul Lucas' work is rightly regarded as both valuable and unique in current aviation publishing, and we are proud to be able to present this selection, collected together in book form for the first time due to overwhelming demand from readers.

Convair B-36D Peacemaker

Convair B-36D/F/H/J Peacemaker - American ten-engine strategic heavy bomber, developed from the earlier B-36B. The main difference was the installation of four additional General Electric J-47 jet engines with a thrust of 5,200 lbf each (23kN), which significantly improved basic characteristics such as speed and range. In the history of aviation, this was almost the only case of building a multi-engine aircraft with mixed power plants.
This feature gained it the slogan "Six turning, four burning".

With later modifications, its radar equipment was significantly improved and also its protective weapons optimized.
The combat service of the more than 300 aircraft built lasted until 1959, when they were completely replaced by the famous Boeing B-52 Stratofortress. None of them ever took part in any of the military conflicts of its time, but the B-36 rightly justified its name as the main preserver of peace in the world in the first decade of the Cold War.

WOW337 De Havilland Mosquito 'Hairless Joe'

During WWII, scarcity of strategic materials such as metals, rubber, oil, lubricant, etc, forced engineers to be more creative in order to find alternative ways of keeping armament production unabated. In an age of all-metal fighter/bomber aircraft, engineers in Great Britain, Germany, Japan, and Russian developed capable warplanes made from wood. The most famous and successful wooden warplane was the de Havilland Mosquito. It was originally designed as an unarmed bomber using non-strategic material for construction.

The Mosquito’s excellent wooden design gave it lightweight and high-speed manoeuvrability. The Mosquito excelled in all the roles that it was given to fulfil, including low- to medium-altitude fighter bomber, photo-reconnaissance, night fighter/bomber, maritime strike aircraft and transport.
The initial project was nearly cancelled due to Lord Beaverbrook’s lack of conviction for the wooden wonder, however Geoffrey de Havilland persisted and in 1941 the Mosquito was by then the fastest operational aircraft in the world.

The Mosquito was often flown in special raids, such as the attack on Amiens Prison in early 1944, and precision attacks against military intelligence, security, and police facilities (such as Gestapo headquarters). On 30 January 1943, the 10th anniversary of the Nazi’s seizure of power, a morning Mosquito attack knocked out the main Berlin broadcasting station while Hermann Goring was speaking, taking his speech off the air. The Mosquito flew with the RAF and other allied air forces operating in just about very theatre during WW2.
